Biological Effects of Wireless Radiation

Radiofrequency Radiation Health Effects Compared to Recommended Guidelines

A comparison of wireless device emissions to the scientific research

1972 study conducted by the US Naval Medical Research Institute on health effects of radiofrequency radiation

Children

Several factors make children especially vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation: their cells are rapidly dividing, their immune systems and nervous systems are still developing, and children have a higher water content which makes their bodies conduct more electricity. Additionally, the skulls of children are thinner than adults allowing radiation to penetrate deeper into the brain.

The infrared images to the right show the difference in thermal activity in the heads of children versus an adult after using a cellphone.

Prenatal Exposure

The Danish Birth Cohort Study shows how second-hand radiation effects young children. The study found a clear association of a mother’s cellphone use and the later development of behavioral and emotional issues in her children.

Sleep

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne study found the electrical nature of EMR confuses the pineal gland (the gland responsible for producing/releasing hormones, including melatonin). The pineal gland responds to EMR in the same way it responds to light – it limits the production of melatonin. Thus, our sleep cycle is altered.

When we don’t get good quality sleep our cells are not able to finish repairing themselves at night and, to add insult to injury, if we are trying to sleep in an EMR environment, EMR effects our bodies ability to produce healthy cells, as found in a study by the Westin A Price Foundation. We need healthy cells in order to lead healthy lives.

In 2007 The World Health Organization summarized research findings related to EMR affecting health in a document called Environmental Health Criteria Monograph 238. In section 5.2.5 they report:

“Sleep is a complex biological process controlled by the central nervous system and is necessary for general health and well-being. The possibility that EMFs may exert a detrimental effect on sleep has been examined in two studies. Using the EEG to assess sleep parameters, Åkerstedt et al. (1999) reported that continuous exposure of healthy volunteers to 50 Hz at 1 µT at night caused disturbances in sleep. In this study, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, slow-wave sleep (stage III and IV), and slow-wave activity were significantly reduced by exposure, as was subjective depth of sleep. Graham & Cook (1999) reported that intermittent, but not continuous, exposure to 60 Hz, 28 µT magnetic fields at night resulted in less total sleep time, reduced sleep efficiency, increased time in stage II sleep, decreased time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and increased latency to first REM period. Consistent with a pattern of poor and broken sleep, volunteers exposed to the intermittent field also reported sleeping less well and feeling less rested in the morning.”

WiFi in Schools

“This website is dedicated to helping the public realize that wireless internet, or WiFi, emits radiation that causes a myriad of serious health effects, including damage to DNA, cancer, and infertility. Research shows that autism, ADHD, and other behavioral problems are also associated with wireless radiation exposure. Many scientific and medical experts have issued warnings because of the evidence before them.”

BioInitiative

“A Rationale for Biologically-based Public Exposure Standards for Electromagnetic Fields (ELF and RF). A report by 29 independent scientists and health experts from around the world about possible risks from wireless technologies and electromagnetic fields. The science, public health, public policy and global response to the growing health issue of chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation in the daily life of billions of people around the world. Covers brain tumor risks from cell phones, damage to DNA and genes, effects on memory, learning, behavior, attention; sleep disruption and cancer and neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. Effects on sperm and miscarriage (fertility and reproduction), effects of wireless on the brain development of the fetus and infant, and effects of wireless classrooms on children and adolescents is addressed. Mechanisms for biological action and public health responses in other countries are discussed. Therapeutic use of very low intensity EMF and RFR are addressed.”

Environmental Health Trust

“Environmental Health Trust (EHT) is a think tank that promotes a healthier environment through research, education, and policy. We are the only nonprofit organization in the world that carries out cutting edge research on environmental health hazards and also works directly with communities, health and education professionals, and policymakers to understand and mitigate these hazards.”
